Transportation & Travel Tips

Arriving

Maui is served by many leading US airlines and international carriers. In many cases direct flights to Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG) are available. Many passengers first arrive at Honolulu International Airport (HNL) and then travel to Maui via an inter-island airline. Maui’s Kapalua Airport and Hana Airport are much smaller, and are served only by regional airlines and private charters.

For information on airport security, prohibited items, and other safe travel news you need to know, visit the Transportation Security Agency website.

Playing it safe

Maui is an extremely safe environment, but when exploring Maui’s natural playgrounds, some care should be taken. Offshore winds and currents can be powerful, and they can change suddenly. Be careful not to stray too far from shore if warning signs are posted or if conditions warrant caution. If you're hiking into a wilderness, be sure to sign in and out with park rangers.

  • Just as you probably do back home, it is always a good idea to lock your car doors and keep valuables out of sight.
  • Call 911 for an emergency requiring police assistance.

Hawaii’s Environment

Much of Maui’s natural beauty has developed because of its geographic isolation from more dense ecosystems.  Introducing plants, produce or animals could introduce pests and non-endemic species could alter this fragile paradise forever.  That's why the Department of Agriculture will inspect and likely confiscate such materials when you arrive.  For more information call (808) 873-3655 or point your browser to the STATE OF HAWAII PLANT QUARANTINE PROGRAM.

Similarly, when you depart, your luggage must pass agricultural inspection at the airport to ensure that no plant insects or diseases are hitching a ride back with you. Be sure that any fruits or plants you take home From Maui are certified for export.
