Lahaina

Home to an array of resorts and hotels, and set along the glittering shore of Kaanapali Beach, Lahaina is Maui’s largest town, and undoubtedly one of the island’s most popular destinations.

Formerly called Lele, the port city of Lahaina (which roughly translates into “relentless sun”), holds an enviable position on Maui’s warm southern shore, providing stunning vistas of the Pacific and the neighboring island of Lanai, great seasonal whale watching, and front row seats to Maui’s famous sunsets.

At one time serving as the capitol of the Hawaiian Kingdom, and later as a base of whaling operations, Lahaina is also a place full of history. Visitors can follow the Historic Trail signposts to learn more about the town’s varied and colorful past.

Today Lahaina’s streets are lined with boutiques, galleries, shops and restaurants catering to all tastes and budgets. There are enough sites and activities here to keep anyone busy. Some don’t miss attractions include the world-famous Banyan Tree (which is 60 feet tall and has spread to encompass an entire city block), the Jodo Mission (featuring a magnificent Buddha and temple), and the Baldwin House (a restored residence from the Missionary era that features many pieces of original furniture).

On Fridays, many of the art galleries in town open their doors for the wonderful Friday Art Night; featuring appearances by local artists, live music, and refreshments. Things start happening just after sunset.

Lahaina Harbor is also the departure point for several whale-watching charters, snorkeling expeditions to fascinating Molokini Crater, and ferries to the neighboring islands of Lanai and Molokai.
