[Calendar Graphic]FAQ's about visiting Maui
In this ongoing series, we answer some of the most frequently asked questions of visitors, as we strive to help make your trip to the Magic Isles the most comfortable it can be!

1) Is there any coffee grown in Maui County? And can I get a cup while on Maui?

Yes, on Maui coffee is grown in many areas.  One of Maui's major coffee crops  is cultivated on the Ka'anapali Estate, 3 miles north of the historic town of Lahaina. You can buy a cup of the Maui grown java at the Espresso Bar of the MauiGrown Coffee company at 277 Lahainaluna Road, 808 661 2728 or order online at www.mauigrowncoffee.com.
The Hawaii Coffee company also produces great coffee on Molokai. You get a cup of their delicious coffee at their Espresso bar and Plantation Gift shop in Kualap’u.  Molokai.  Monday through Friday, they offer an interesting mule drawn wagon tour; it goes to the coffee fields, sorting facility and Kalapu’u reservoir. If you can't make it to Molokai you can order their wonderful coffee by calling 877-322-3276 or going online at www.coffeesofhawaii.com.

2) What is the temperature at the Summit of Haleakala?

At Haleakala National Park the temperature at the Summit is 10-20 degrees cooler than sea level so be sure bring some warm clothes. The journey to the summit of Haleakala brings you from coastal Maui, to the remote, native, high elevation world protected by the park. Here on Maui's highest peak you find an island in the sky where the clouds spread out below you like a second layer of ocean. Cinder cones, rare plants, native birds, and hiking trails await you. For park information, call 808 572-4400, a recorded message is available and it will likely contain an answer to your questions. Camping is by permit. For additional information please go to www.nps.gov/hale/index.htm

You bet there is!  We now have a PDF version of our beautiful Maui Travel Planner available online. Your friend can view it immediately.  Just tell her or him to click on the image above or go to www.visitmaui.com/downloadform.html

If you have a question for us, please feel free to e-mail insider@visitmaui.com and we'll consider it for a future issue of the Maui Insider.

The Maui Insider omits non-standard diacritical marks to accommodate the vast majority of internet users who do not recognize these marks when searching the internet. Also, accurate display of true Hawaiian 'okinas and kahakos would require users to have special Hawaiian fonts installed on their computers.

Outdoor Fun  -- Something Special for Everyone

No matter what your age, fitness level, or experience there is a Maui activity just right for you.  Maui has virtually every micro climate on the planet, from the dry upland desert of Haleakala Crater to the fantastically colorful and stunning near shore ocean environment.  This means you can choose to experience something completely new, or try a familiar activity and see Maui makes even the everyday special.

Here are a few of the activities that our visitors tell us are the highlights in their Maui memories:

Hike Heavenly Hana
Hana Highway is 52 serpentine miles from Kahului. The road winds around 600 curves and 54 one-lane bridges, waterfalls splashing beside the road. Fruit trees dangle their offerings. Wild ginger perfumes the air, and dramatic vistas unfold around every bend. At Ke‘anae, people tend their taro patches while the turquoise sea crashes against the rugged lava shore. On the road to Hana there are state parks for picnicking, botanical gardens, and fruit stands. The rain forests of the coast eventually ease into the rolling, emerald colored meadows of the Hana Ranch. Guided horseback rides entice visitors to explore its valleys and forests.

Swing through Maui's Golf Coast
Four fabulous resort destinations line the island’s gorgeous shorelines. Collectively, they house 9 award winning courses, rated 3.5 stars or better. Each is a wedge shot from the luxurious accommodations within its home resort. All have panoramic views of the ocean and island scenery. Maui’s courses include the Kapalua Golf Courses, the Bay and the Plantation course home of the Mercedes Championship where the best of the PGA TOUR compete in the season's opener. South Maui is home to the Wailea Golf courses, including the Blue, Emerald and the Gold course. The Ka'anapali Golf Resort courses host the Senior Skins Game.

Here's what we mean ...

I visited Maui in October 2005 to attend my daughter's wedding.  I was feeling sad, because my husband was unable to accompany me. After I arrived at the beach condominium I rented, I decided to stroll along your beautiful beach.

As I walked in the water, I noticed a father and mother with two beautiful little daughters. One little girl's appearance was strikingly similar to my daughter's when she was about the same age. The little sisters were dressed in matching mu mu...Red hibiscus on crisp white cotton. Each girl had her hair tied up on top of her head, and pinned in, a red hibiscus. They were gaily tossing orchids into the ocean as their father held a box brimming with flowers.

This poignant scene took my breath away.  I did not want to disturb them, worrying I would interrupt their (and my) enchantment. As I walked around them, I tried to be as obscure as possible, giving them wide berth. They all looked my way.

I stopped and said, "I don't want to get in your way. This is such a beautiful moment."  The father replied, "NO! NO! You're not in our way. Please come and toss an orchid in with us."

I was so moved, I feared I would begin to cry. Then the girls each took one of my hands, and led me to the ocean's edge. They exclaimed, "Ma'am, if you toss an orchid into the ocean, you will return to Hawaii'.  Please toss one in!!"  They each took an orchid from their father's box, and gently placed one in each of my palms.

They solemnly instructed, "Now wish and believe that you will return to Hawaii', then toss your orchids in."  I did wish and believe...that I would return with my husband. I tossed my orchids into the surf with all my might and watched them float out to sea.

Both girls solemnly nodded and one said, "Oh Ma'am, that was a great toss. You will be back for sure!!"

I didn't see that family again, but I see them in my memory. I will never forget that moment in Maui.

This August, my husband and I will be coming to Maui to celebrate our anniversary.  We will toss orchids in the ocean together and wish and believe we will return again.
